Loft living is fast becoming the norm for city dwellers. A great space for those with a minimalist life style. For those people who live out of their homes, and not so much in the home. People that don't want to mow the grass, or repair the sprinkler system every spring. Lofts are great for people that travel. Just turn off the oven and iron, lock the door, and leave. People that like the action of the city, the closeness of all the things to see and do like lofts. Walk to work, or dining, or to all of those really great shops and service boutiques that aren't part of a chain. But, and there is always the but, lofts come in many different styles in Phoenix. Used to be, a loft was a converted 100 year old warehouse in downtown Phoenix. That is still true, and many of the most charming loft residences are in just such buildings. Refitting the old buildings with new heating and electrical systems, elevators, security systems, parking, and whatever else you can think of, creates the opportunity for some truly great urban living space. Old beams, exposed brick, and high ceilings create charm and space that feel good and are just plain fun to live in. The buildings in the Central Corridor represent the best of this type of loft, and come with the whole package of convenient access to everything downtown. A few other "older" buildings are scattered about Phoenix, some in the Scottsdale area and the in the Tempe downtown area, and many of these are great places to live, if not right downtown. Since the early 1990's, developers, running out of old buildings to convert, have taken to building loft type facilities from scratch. Although lacking some of the charm of the older buildings, these "new" lofts are well built, with logical living designs and amenities. And there are other large development areas like Osborn and now Tempe where loft living can be found, and at less prices than the Phoenix Central Corridor. And there are many unique projects all over the City of Phoenix that offer a unique charm and life style of their own.

Traditionally, a loft was a big open space you could finish with a kitchen and bath and scatter furniture about. Although finish work has become more sophisticated over the years, a loft is truly a high ceiling open space. Newer rehabs or brand new buildings have taken to adding a few walls, and kitchens and baths have become very nice indeed, with more defined spaces becoming the norm. Still, the point of a loft is open space, and space definition must be in the mind of the owner. A loft invites it's owner to arrange the "things" to suit the fancy of the owner. Designated space for the owners auto may be open or covered, depending on price, and storage is limited. Remember the minimalist concept. If the buyers needs are more geared toward defined spaces, perhaps a condo or townhome is more in line. And there are some good condo towers downtown, as well as all over Phoenix.
